The association “Gračaničko keranje ” (crochet), three years ago developed a flower as a symbol of remembrance of the victims of the Srebrenica genocide.
The flower has a message: white signifies innocence, green signifies hope, and eleven petals stand for July 11, 1995.
“This idea was born out of a desire to show solidarity and to develop a symbol that everyone will carry with them in BiH and throughout the world.
Here, today, 19 years after the genocide in Srebrenica, we want more people to wear this flower as a sign of sympathy for the victims, but also for their family members, said the president of the board of the association Abida Jahić.
She explained that the organizers decided to define a symbolic price for the flower so that the resources could help those who make it – the women of Srebrenica and unemployed women.
“The association has decided that the flower must not be commercialized. We only calculate the cost of making a flower, and that any woman making a flower, and these are unemployed women and mothers of Srebrenica, get two BAM, and the remaining money is used for the purchase of materials,” explained Jahić.
The primary objective of the association is to promote and protect traditional techniques of crochet as one of the oldest crafts in the area of Gracanica and BiH as a whole.
