The company KEMIS-BH is planning to build a center for bioremediation of soil contaminated with oil and oil derivatives, which will be the first of its kind in our country and even in the narrow region because such a center does not exist in Serbia nor Montenegro. This project was recently accepted by the Fund for Environmental Protection of FBiH, and they have approved funds of 50, 000 BAM for its implementation.
According to Maid Hadzimujic, director of the company, the idea for the establishment of such a center was created in 2014 in collaboration of the company KEMIS-BH and the Czech company Dekonta. Since then, a lot has been done on collecting of documents needed for the construction and functioning of the center.
The process of obtaining building permits is now in progress. They expect that the construction of the center should start in spring 2017, and they hope, if everything goes according to the plan, it could start working in the second half of 2017.
” The project will lead to the relieving of the environment and reducing environmental impact, improving the status and development of the waste management system in BiH, and contribute to the development of new technologies and creating new workplaces. Moreover, it is the first form of protection of groundwater, and we know that water will be one in the most important natural resources in the future,” he said.
On the matter of which lands in BiH it is necessary to work bioremediation on, he says that there is no serious risk assessment of contaminated land (bio) remediation done in BiH. “The process of bioremediation can treat the soil contaminated by organic pollutants (chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons, BTEX, PAHs, oils, phenols, etc.) which are present in the soil that are located next to gas stations, along the highways, railroads, in the case of oil spills, sludge, groundwater, construction and demolition waste in reconstruction or construction of roads, railway tracks etc.,” he said.
He also added that the catastrophic floods that happened in 2014 brought additional contamination of the surrounding flooded areas, which is certainly a burden on the environment, which in this way can significantly or even completely reduce the soil.
