A new, concrete runway was built on the sport airport Urije in Prijedor, next to the 900-meter-long grass runway.
The small airport Urije, situated two and a half kilometres away from Prijedor, also got a new hangar covering 300 square meters, 400 meters of fence, a taxiway, a platform of 400 square meters, video surveillance, equipment for planes and a radio station…
Construction began in March and there are still some final works waiting to be done in order for the runway to be ready for use. This will mean new opportunities for development of the city on the Sana River, from tourist to economic opportunities.
“We are only waiting for the official promotion of the Airport. The airport resembles the most modern, small European airports,” confirmed the President of the Air Club Prijedor Milan Marković.
Marković reminded that this is the project IPA-Can that has been implemented since 2013. The project is worth 800.000 BAM; 85 percent of the funds were provided by the EU, and the rest by the City of Prijedor.
“Even much larger airports could be envious of this equipment. This equipment will be used for searching and rescuing at the territory of BiH and the region. The airport is fitted to be in function throughout the year, all 365 days, 24 hours per day, except in the situations when the weather is so bad that flying is impossible,” said Marković and added that during the implementation of the project they also equipped three small planes that can fly at least four hours anywhere in Europe without any limitations.
Through partner cooperation, this cross-border project connected the Municipality of Bovec from Slovenia, the Italian Municipality of Trecento, Rab from Croatia, the Ministry of Economy of the Livno Canton with investment on the airport in Livno, and the airport Lisčiji jarak in Belgrade and the airport Nikšić in Nikšić.
Airport Urije is the only small airport in BiH with a permit for night flying.
