Several thousands of citizens gathered yesterday on the hill Koščan, in the Municipality of Hadžići, to decently mark the anniversary of defense of one of the most important strategic points of the defense of Sarajevo during the aggression on BiH in the period from 1992 until 1995.
One of the war commandants of the 9th Hill Brigade of the Army of Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ešref Bajraktarević, spoke about the strategic significance of the hill Koščan and its defense.
“The pass Koščan is located seven kilometers from the center of Hadžići, dividing the Lepenica valley and the Sarajevo field. According to the census from 1991, it had 39 residents and they were all Muslims. In the past war, it was seemingly an insignificant military facility, with some 20 houses of hard-working hosts. Chetniks from the village of Drozgometva located two kilometers away from Koščan were in the constant fear from possible attack by HOS and Territorial Defense of BiH, later the ARBiH.
“They were afraid of the fall of their centuries-old Chetnik aerie. They attacked Koščan several times and always failed, with great loses in man force and technology. On April 16, 1993 they experienced a huge breakdown, despite of the fact that the particular action was led by the Chetnik General Mladić” (Excerpt from the war book “Return from the Dead” by Emir Čović – Tola)
