Within the program of the Day of the Municipality Stari Grad, the opening ceremony of the preserved and restored archaeological site Atmejdan was held today.
The first phase of the conservation of archaeological excavations in Atmejdan was done in 2012, under the supervision of the Institute for Protection of Cultural and Natural Heritage of the Sarajevo Canton and the Government of FB&H, which funded the work.
The first phase was preceded by the archaeological work done by the institutions “Museum of Sarajevo”, the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Society of archaeologists 1894. This first phase, called “Madrasah”, included the conservation of the excavated remains of the madrasah (Islamic high school).
The second stage of the works, the disclosure of the harem with the complete burial sites and the conservation and rehabilitation of the remains of the Bakr-Baba Mosque, was done in 2014.
A bridge that stretches over the excavation site was also built in order to allow the visitors a better presentation of the archaeological park. This work was funded by the friendly Turkish town of Bursa, Stari Grad Municipality and the Institute for Protection of Cultural and Natural Heritage of Sarajevo Canton.
The opening ceremony, hosted by the Mayor of Stari Grad Municipality Ibrahim Hadžibajrić, was attended by Recep Altepe-the Mayor of Bursa, Mustafa Dundar-the Mayor of Osman Gazi Municipality, as well as by the representatives from other municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republic of Turkey, Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia and Macedonia, with which the Stari Grad Municipality has fraternal bonds.
