A two-day Mediterranean Conference on the topic “Illicit trade in small arms and light weapons and the fight against terrorism in the Mediterranean region” started in the hotel Sunce in Neum.
The conference was jointly opened by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of BiH, Ana Trišić Babic; Chairman of the OSCE Permanent Council and the Swiss Ambassador, Thomas Greminger; Chairman of the Contact Group with the Mediterranean Partners, Ambassador Wolf Žugić; Head of the Serbian delegation at the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Diana Vukomanovic; and the OSCE Secretary General, Ambassador Lamberto Zannier .
On this occasion the participants including representatives of the member states of the OSCE, partners for cooperation in the Mediterranean, international and non-governmental organizations, will talk about the challenges related to the arms trade. The illegal trade route in the OSCE region and other regions will be discussed with the aim to identify potential measures and mechanisms to combat these threats.
Five sessions will be held within the conference. The illicit arms trade and the fight against terrorism will be addressed today, while the role of women in strengthening political, economic and social life will be the topic of the tomorrow’s discussion.
To remind, since 1995 OSCE holds annual events with their partners for cooperation in the Mediterranean (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia).
