Bosnian Sacir Husrep used to make Boats out of necessity, and now as a Hobby

Sacir Husrep (80) is a professional driver, but he is dealing with the construction of boats. He lives in the settlement of Ostrozac on Jablanica Lake and he is making boats in the basement of his house where he spends most of his time since his wife died a few years ago.

He said that he made his first boat in 1957, when he was just 18 years old. He worked in various companies, and  Jablanica Lake was accumulated during that period and he was carefully keeping every plank that he could find. He said that he made his first boat just to survive.

He worked as a seasonal worker in Montenegro or Slovenia, and he had to announce his return seven days earlier in order to get a boat waiting to take him to the other side of the lake. Now he makes boats as a hobby and for tourists.

He is not sure if his sons will inherit him in this hobby, even though both of them have a great talent.

“My son Fikret has a good will for this kind of work, but he also has a big family, so he has no time for this. My son Said has my nerves, he is very precise, but he works as a religious worker, and it is good for him,” said Sacir.

He made a dozen boats, and, according to him, they were all first class.

“One will always stay in my memory. It was a beast of a boat, a water bus, he could take more than 30 people in a tour, and I used to transport about 10 meters of wood on it. When I finished it, I invited my friends and neighbours and 18 young men was needed to take it out of the workshop. It was my famous Velez,” recalled Sacir.

He named it like that because, as he says, FC Velez was supposed to be the champion of Yugoslavia, but they did not let it happen.

Considering that the boat that he is working on at the moment is the last one, he stated that the next thing for him will be to build a raft.
