Deputy Director of the Tourist Board of Herzegovina-Neretva County Semir Temim opened the International Cup in Fly-Fishing, which is taking place on a nine-kilometre long path on Buna River that goes through the natural surroundings of Blagaj and Buna.
There are ten teams competing in fly fishing with a total of 40 competitors from BiH, Montenegro and Croatia, and the three best teams and three individuals will receive awards.
The Tourist Board of HNC wants to promote Buna River and its environment as a tourist destination with this competition, but also to emphasize the need to protect the brook trout, which is endangered. It is the most numerous in Buna River, but it is also present in other watercourses in the basin of Neretva River.
“We have been thinking for a long time to use these rivers for this type of tourism, which is becoming increasingly popular in the world, and the fishing type of tourism would be a great opportunity for people who live near the river to offer some additional services, and thus earn some extra money,” said Temim.
The International Cup in Fly-Fishing on Buna River is organized for the first time this year by the Tourist Board of HNC and it represents one of the activities of the project of RiTour “Valorizing Cultural and Natural Heritage through Cross-Border Cooperation of Urban Tourist Destinations on Krajina Rivers of the Adriatic Basin”, which is funded by the EU within the Interreg IPA Program of Cross-border Cooperation Croatia – BiH – Montenegro 2014 – 2020.
The Project Coordinator of the Tourist Association of HNC, Ramiz Basic, introduced everyone present with the project RiTour, the activities that they have realized so far, as well as the plans for the future period.
