Do libraries in BiH have a future? How often people visit libraries, borrow books, or the digitalization took its toll?
Reading books used to be a satisfaction for all those who love good literature. However, in the digital era a great deal of information from libraries can be found on the Internet. So the question is: what will be the role of libraries in the future?
“There is an evident decrease. The fall in trend of visits and use of library services is recorded. However, that does not mean that library as such should not exist because libraries of today offer some new contents that do not include only physical access to the user,” said Narcis Saračević from the library of the city of Sarajevo.
“Book and libraries have a future in BiH so in that context we are great optimists,” said Ismet Ovčina, director of the National and University Library of BiH.
New generations, technologies and modern society made tablets, mobile phones and latest gadgets slowly push the books as objects which are held in our hands, visits to the library and borrowing books out of practice.
Some of the answers in the survey:
“The last time I was in the library was 1991. Sad, but true.”
“To be honest, I don’t remember.”
“Yesterday, at the academy.”
“I spend a lot of time in the library in the Art House of Sevdah, because I love reading sevdah books.”
“Probably in the last semester, when I had to write a term paper.”
“I earn enough money to buy the books I like.”
