In cooperation with Posao.ba and the Project for Employment of Youth (YEP) of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SCD), Startup Weekend was held in Sarajevo in Kino Meeting Point from 19-21 July. This was an event that lent young people the chance to develop their business ideas.
The award for the best idea at this year’s Startup Weekend in Sarajevo was Kids’n’tech, with the project that teaches kids HTML through games. The winning team won 20.000 dollars worth of services of the “Google App Engine”, a seven day stay in San Francisco for a special training, as well as two years use of the software “Pagevamp”, which makes websites from sites on Facebook. The award for the best design went to the team “Keep Working”, and the best presentation was by the team “QR Code”.
In addition to the winning projects, in Meeting Point other interesting and creative projects were presented, such as the idea for “City Reveal” on tourist visits to the city that would be led by artists, as well as “Makamendo”, an interesting application that penalizes someone if a deadline is missed.
One of the mentors included in the Sarajevo Startup Weekend was Martin Omander, the Program Manager at Google, who was in Sarajevo for the first time in order to work with young people who wish to launch IT startups. Participants of Startup Weekend Sarajevo had the chance to meet Martin and speak with him on their business ideas.
In addition to his mentoring engagement, Martin held a “Google CodeLab”, a workshop focused on back-end developers. In addition to BiH, Startup Weekend Sarajevo was held on the same day in Portugal, Australia, Mexico, USA, Columbia, and many other countries.
