Florence Hartmann, who was arrested on Thursday ahead of the pronouncement of the verdict to Radovan Karadzic, is still in complete isolation in the detention unit of the Hague Tribunal.
Her lawyer confirmed for the Guardian that he had submitted three requests for her release but that they will not be considered before Tuesday, due to the Easter holidays.
Hartmann said that she is in isolation and that the guards are visiting her every 15 minutes, while she is not allowed to walk as other prisoners. She also complained that she has no right to turn off the light in her cell.
“It is a bizarre situation, watching Mladic and other prisoners walking around while I am in the cell. It was particularly shocking to watch the Dutch and UN policemen in front of the tribunal chasing away the mothers of Srebrenica and survivors that are trying to protect me,” she said in private phone conversation.
She was earlier convicted for publishing protected documents of Hague Tribunal in her book “Peace and Punishment”. Hartmann released back then that there was an agreement between Serbia and the Hague Tribunal on the removal of certain documents that are proving the involvement of Serbia in the war in BiH.
Her son Stephane told the Guardian that French Consul in The Hague visited his mother in custody.
From Tribunal explained for the British media that Hartmann is not in isolation but she is separated from the other male prisoners, and that the president of the court Theodore Meron rejected requests of her lawyer.
