The capital of BiH is slowly taking on the contours of a sports capital. Month after months, sports events that promote healthy life style are organized, with thousands of people participating.
On the streets of Sarajevo there are more people who ride bikes, and there are more people jogging on the Wilson’s Promenade and the Alley in Ilidža. Experts in the field of cycling and running claim that progress is evident in comparison with previous years, but that Bosnians and Herzegovinians are still not genuinely a sports nation.
“Both sports are in expansion and developing to a certain extent for a number of years now, so consequently we have more competitions. However, I think we still did not reach the stage of a genuine sports nation. Ultimate athletes must personally fight in order to reach the top level and the country does not do enough to support sports adequately. Recreationists exist in every country of the world and we are not an exception, we have only realized that it is better for our body to run a bit or turn pedals between doing errands and overeating. Let’s hope that the enthusiasts who have potential will receive support in the future so that the others, not only us, can say that we are becoming a sports nation,” said Nisad Selimović, spokesman of the organization Giro di Sarajevo.
The Cycling Club Trek team Sarajevo has been organizing group bike rides in the city and the mountains for years. Senad Bečković from this organization says that more and more people from Sarajevo are outdoors, doing different sports.
“The outdoor world in Sarajevo has been in progression for the past three years. Many cyclists can be seen on the streets and mountains and people use bikes as means of transportation, which is a modern lifestyle. Moreover, the running community also increases year after year and runners from 30 countries of the world already come to some of the events,” said Bečković.
As of recently, Sarajevo also has the system of public bikes where all citizens can rent a bike with a simple procedure and ride it to certain locations where parking lots are made. The city is also working on the construction of cycling trails.
