The city of Brcko started the initiative to transform Brcko into a so-called smart city, the city that will enable a better life quality for its citizens.
This concept, which has been launched by many cities in the world, is mainly based on the introduction of smart grid, the stronger introduction of ICT technologies, Internet connectivity of all buildings in the city (Internet of Things – IoT) using M2M (Machine to Machine) communication that will contribute to reducing of environmental pollution through the introduction of intelligent transport systems, as well as increasing energy efficiency through the use of smart measurement and the introduction of innovative solutions in the construction industry.
Investment in the amount of 300 million EUR is planned for the realization of this initiative.
The base for the development of the concept of “Smart City Brcko” is to construct advanced information and communication platform based on optic infrastructure with data centers as a major hub in its center.
Data center should provide highly available support to services that are important to the citizens and institutions of Brcko District, and which will allow faster, easier and more flexible communication and data exchange between all institutions.
Establishment of a zone of access centers (nodes) and route of communications infrastructure is also planned, and it will allow efficient connection of all public administration buildings that are owned or managed by Brcko District, such as health care facilities, schools and other facilities with the assumption that individual residential building, in further stages, can also be connected to that kind of a network.
This would ultimately enable the provision of broadband services to all users (individual houses, collective housing facilities, schools, kindergartens, health care institutions, business facilities, cultural institutions, alarm systems, etc.) in the center of Brcko District, as well as most suburban and rural areas of Brcko District in the later stages.
