Brothers Dario and Damir Konjicija, like many other BH families, escaped from their homes and country during the war. Six months after the war started all across the country, nine-year old Dario and five-year old Damir went with their parents to the Czech Republic. Today they are in Los Angeles, living their American dream.
The beginning was, as to all the other refugee families, very difficult. They lived in various refugee centers for five years, and then they got a green card in 1997 and moved to the United States.
They started loving this place over time. They were engaged in acting from an early age. Damir acted in theater, and Dario performed stand-up comedy. They made a pact that when they graduate, they will move to California to make a try in show business. They had the support of their parents.
They spent next five years writing screenplays. Their goal was to work on the TV series. They have gained many friends, and people started recognizing their work. Their effort paid off and they got their first job – working on the CBS show “The Great Indoors”.
“This is a new series that will be premiered this month. It is a comedy starring the famous Joel McHale. He plays the role of a famous journalist who works with a group of people in their 20’s, who are obsessed with their phones,” said Damir.
They noted how lucky they are to work with a group of very talented writers and creator of the show, Mike Gibbons.
They are looking for inspiration in everyday events and private life. The first working morning begins with a story about how they spent the weekend and Dario says that he is surprised how many stories they get from that conversation.
“There is a certain kind of pressure to have the original story that will make you stand out from the others. There are many different comedy shows on TV at the moment and it is important to tell a story that is not shown. We are proud of what we do and we think it will be a great show,” said Damir.
They never lost connection with their homeland. They regularly hear from their relatives who live in Sarajevo.
Origin of brothers Konjicija is especially interesting to Americans and it helped them a lot in their success.
“Believe it or not, there are not one other Bosnian who write comedy in Los Angeles. This led us to excellent meetings and we managed to stand out,” said Damir and Dario added that the biggest problem for others is to pronounce their name.
The series “The Great Indoors” will be premiered on the 27th of October, on CBS.
