The Prosecution of Canton Sarajevo with its work in the past year and the adoption of final judgments requested a total of 100 years of imprisonment.
“I am proud since this report shows that this Prosecution is one of the best ones in BiH. This report shows that the quality of our work has significantly improved compared to the report from 2015. Everything that we have indicated, we tried to implement,” said Dalida Burzic, Chief Prosecutor of the Prosecution of CS, adding that these results are imperative to continue its successful work in the future as well.
The Chief Prosecutor said that cases of corruption and organized crime will definitely continue to be the focus of the work of the Prosecution and as it was last year. Azra Bavcic, the spokeswoman for the Prosecution of CS, explained that the Prosecution of CS in cooperation with law enforcement agencies realized 10 actions only in cases of economic crime and corruption since January last year until the 24th of February this year.
In the past year, the Prosecution of CS filed 61 lawsuits more than in 2015. Also, there are more lawsuits for criminal offenses punishable by a sentence of imprisonment on over 10 years. Most indictments were in cases of general crime, a total of 1231 of them.
On indictments of this judicial institution was adopted 2032 first-instance verdicts, or 45 % more than the judgment in 2015, and adopted 249 final convictions. In the past year was concluded 57 of the plea agreements, which is 12 less than in 2015. In 44 % of the agreements, imprisonment was requested.
When it comes to cases of corruption, which recently raised a big fuss in public, the Prosecution of CS has opened 50 investigations in these cases and issued 19 indictments, which is actually three times more than in the previous period.
According to statistics, 3504 applications remained unresolved compared to 6,358 people. This means that the number of cases in comparison to the previous year was reduced by 31 %, and for two years by 50 %. Otherwise, the Prosecution of CS receives about 20 criminal charges on a daily basis.
In the area of Canton Sarajevo a total of 38 cases of murders are considered as unresolved. Of these, 25 murders were done by unknown perpetrators, while 13 cases are in the stage of investigation. In the last 14 years, since 2003 when the Prosecution of CS was formed, eight cases of murder were received that have not been completed yet. Four cases were referred from the Prosecutor’s Office of East Sarajevo, and two from the Prosecution of BiH.
Of these, the Prosecution of Canton Sarajevo took 30 cases over from the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Sarajevo, and ten of these cases are from the war period. This data was presented at yesterday’s press conference of the Prosecution of Canton Sarajevo, where they actually presented the results of the work of this judicial institutions in the past year.
