The Government of the Sarajevo Canton yesterday considered the Information on measures and activities being undertaken in circumstances of increased air pollution which has been ongoing in the Sarajevo Canton for 25 days already.
The suspension of classes in elementary and high schools, upon the order by the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth, was being implemented yesterday, and the Ministry will keep monitoring reports from health institutions and professional institutions in order to make decisions about classes in next week.
In order to make regulations in this area to follow the situation on the field better and in order to give space for more efficient action under such circumstances, the Government of the Sarajevo Canton, upon the proposal by the Ministry of Physical Planning, Construction and Environmental Protection, accepted amendments to the Plan of intervention measures in circumstances of increased air pollution in the Sarajevo Canton.
These new measures of action in the period of declared episode of readiness, which is ongoing currently, ban the traffic of vehicles whose engines have a norm less than EURO 3 with increased controls by the bodies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. This does not relate to police vehicles, vehicles of the Ministry of Defense, vehicles of public transportation, of public utility enterprises, vehicles with diplomatic license plates and vehicles of emergency interventions (emergency service and firefighters).
Moreover, these measures also include the ban of traffic for freight motor vehicles whose total weight exceeds 3.5 tons, at the section from Otoka to Baščaršija in both directions, except in the period between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and in the period from 12 p.m. until 6 a.m. This does not relate to vehicles of public transportation, vehicles of public utility enterprises, emergency interventions and delivery vehicles for food supplies. During the traffic suspension, signs of prohibition must be placed on streets and access ways to the endangered area.
For all combustion plans over 1 MW which use solid fuels and heavy oils for combustion, a warning has been issued to reduce the production of thermal energy by two degrees at least.
