Family, friends, colleagues, mayors of other municipalities and cities in BiH, and citizens said the final goodbye to the Mayor of Zenica Husejin Smajlović yesterday. Smajlović passed away two days ago at the age of 65.
Great hall of the City Council in Zenica was not great enough to accommodate everyone who came to pay tribute to Husejin Smajlović and to write something in the book of condolences. Representatives of the Canton, the City of Zenica, and mayors of municipalities and cities in BiH said and heard only words of praise for Smajlović at the commemoration held yesterday.
Muhamed Ramović addressed the audience on behalf of the Federation of Municipalities and Cities in BiH. He said that Zenica and the entire BiH lost a great man.
“Husejin was one of the best and most successful mayors in the history of BiH and that is confirmed by his work and simplicity,” Ramović said.
First man of the Municipal Board of the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) Ibrahim Šišić said that Smajlović can only be mentioned as a good man and brave mayor.
“I felt as if he was a bigger political brother who gave you hope and a sense of safety. In his work he achieved remarkable results and only future generations will see and appreciate them. He was a man who loved ordinary people and who suffered when other people suffered. He truly believed that a man dies once, but that he lives twice and that our actions will echo in the future. We will remember his greatness and the warmth that he possessed, and future generations which have not met him will remember him after his actions which changed the face of this city. We will be proud of living and building in the time of this great mayor,” Šišić said.
After the commemoration, funeral for Smajlović was held in the Čaršijska Mosque and he was buried in Obrenovci, where he was born. The funeral was attended by several thousands of citizens, which speaks of his goodness and the actions that represented him in the best possible light to the fellow citizens, BiH, and the entire world.
