Seven days from the beginning of the archaeological research in the area of the site Crkvine in Vesela near Bugojno the first concrete signs of the existence of the remains of the sacral object from the distant past appeared.
In addition to the remains of the walls, a stone cover, which is supposed to belong to medieval sarcophagus, was found.
Ajla Sejfuli from the Heritage Museum in Travnik, which manages the archaeological excavations on the property owned by Husein Smajić from Bugojno said that this is, most likely, a complex object from the Middle Ages.
“It is very important for the facility to be preserved as soon as possible and presented to the public. It would be a great shame for Bugojno if it ends up back in the ground. We are currently working on excavating the western side of the site, where we found the stone cober of a medieval sarcophagus.
“There have been earlier found in the Travnik area, in the vicinity of Jajce, near Sarajevo and Foča, originally from the late 14th and early 15th century. If time serves us well, we will soon have more concrete data,” highlights Sejfuli.
He points out that the area, which is the subject of archaeological research, is very rich with evidence from prehistoric times, antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Ottoman period, including the Modern Age.
All relevant institutions at all levels should be involved in these activities since it is in the interest of the entire community.
