The Congress of North American Bosniaks (CNAB) welcomed the adoption of the resolution in the House of Representatives of the State of Michigan on proclaiming May 31st the Day of White Bands in that state.
The CNAB President Hamdija Čustović thanked the members of this House for their support to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Bosniaks in the US state of Michigan who on May 31st mark the 23rd anniversary of when the Serbian authorities in Prijedor issued an order to all non-Serbs to mark their houses with white flags or sheets and carry white bands if leaving their homes.
A Bosnian activists from Grand Rapids Sanel Fazlić, who survived the horrors in Kozarac, said he has the privilege to live in a state that recognizes the importance of true memory of the victims of the genocide in Prijedor and elsewhere in B&H, which occurred just two decades ago in the heart of Europe.
The former President of CNAB Haris Alibašić, who is the initiator of the resolution in the State of Michigan, said that this is an important gesture of the State of Michigan towards the families whose lives have been affected by the horrors of war in B&H.
“The resolution reminds us of the tragedy of war and the worst crime committed in Europe since the Holocaust, and what happens when intolerance, hatred and evil prevail. The horrors of genocide anywhere in the world must never be forgotten”, adds Alibašić.
