Borut Pahor, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, spoke about the talk he had with the members of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), regarding the alleged intentions to redraw the borders of BiH.
As was said in a statement from Pahor’s cabinet that he was an advocate of BiH, its territorial integrity, European perspective, and peaceful development.
It is stressed that president Pahor wants BiH to become part of the European Union (EU) as soon as possible and that he consistently emphasizes the importance of a geopolitical approach to EU enlargement, which would include BiH, which is currently the weakest formally linked to the EU.
“President Pahor regularly warns against the idea of disintegration of BiH and redrawing the borders in the Western Balkans. In that context, out of concern about these ideas, he asked that question to his interlocutors, all three members of the BiH Presidency, when he visited Sarajevo in early March,” as he stated.
At that time, Pahor specifically asked “Can you in BiH peacefully separate, considering that there have been more and more voices in Europe lately that think that the disintegration of Yugoslavia should be completed?”
Pahor also spoke publicly about that in his address to the Parliament of the Republic of North Macedonia on September 25th, 2020.
“I would like to point out my assessment, which is important if it is correct: If there is no enlargement, the thesis that the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia is not over yet and that it is necessary to establish ethnic borders instead of the existing ones will slowly become dominant in this region. We know from historical experience that it is most likely that such a process cannot be implemented peacefully without conflicts that could also jeopardize security and stability in Southeast Europe in general. That is why I have said many times that EU enlargement to the Western Balkans is an exclusive political issue that also requires an even more thoughtful strategy of the EU. ” he told then.
In the light of the European perspective of the Western Balkans, the President of the Republic of Slovenia is also preparing a meeting of the leaders of the Brdo – Brijuni Process initiative, which is scheduled for May, Klix.ba writes.
