Pope Francis yesterday warned about the danger of “Balkanization” for the European Union, adding that Europe, in order to avoid this threat, needs to encourage “creativity” again and accept that there is a “healthy division” within it.
At a press conference held on the plane that was returning from Armenia, the Pope warned that it could come to “splitting off” the province such as Scotland and Catalonia, which can lead to “Balkanization” of Europe.
“In order to find itself in the power that lies in its roots, Europe has to take a step towards creativity and healthy division, which includes giving more independence and more freedom to the countries of the European Union,” said Pope Francis.
On the way to Armenia, Pope Francis called “all Europeans on responsibility” in this delicate phase.
“There is something that is not good in the massive, heavy union. However, we should be careful with the water in order not to throw the baby as well. We should rather make an effort to recreate,” he said and called Europe on finding again its creativity and thinking about creating some new form of Union.
“Two key words are creativity and fertility,” emphasized Pope Francis.
