Shelter for the stray animals whose construction started in October 2013, should open its doors this fall, and start solving problems of stray dogs in and around Zenica.
The Mayor of Zenica, Husein Smajlović emphasized that Zenica is one of the very few local communities in B&H which have been actively involved in permanent resolution of the problem of stray animals from the very beginning, while respecting the provisions of the Law on Protection and Welfare animals, as well as the laws that are regulating this field, as written in an open letter on the official website of Zenica.
“The project of building animal shelters have been started with that goal. Construction works are now completed, and works on the exterior are in progress and their completion is expected by October this year. At the same time, activities on purchasing equipment for asylum, as well as addressing of management and operation methods are in progress parallel to the activities on the registration of stray dogs and those with known owners in order to get a realistic picture of the situation to be able to actively monitor development of these activities, “said Smajlović.
He also added that with the opening of the asylum, city government will deal with the complex communal problem in a systematic way.
“We are very well aware that this issue is making different reactions and that there are two opposing views when it comes to the ways of dealing with the problem of stray animals. For this reason, the City of Zenica has chosen the only correct way of dealing with this sensitive problem by cooperation with the relevant national and foreign partners, with all necessary measures taken to resolve this problem as soon as possible on the satisfaction of all citizens of Zenica,” said Smajlović and called all residents of city of Zenica on patience and the subjects that are involved in resolving of this problem to express the willingness and cooperation and not to obtain the rash actions and unfounded claims.
