There was a total of 663,785 Internet subscribers and 2,909,236 Internet users recorded in the last year, as announced by the Regulatory Agency for Communications (RAC) in the Report on the results of the Annual Survey for the year of 2016.
The data is based on the definition by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), according to which an Internet user is a person that is between 16 and 74 years old. The rate of use of the Internet in BiH amounted to 82.39 % in 2016.
When it comes to the Internet access, the dominant type of Internet access in the year of 2016 was xDSL, and the number of users of this access makes 58.04 % of the total number of broadband internet subscribers in BiH, while in the second place are subscribers of cable access, and they make a total of 32.18 % of the total number of broadband internet subscribers. The rate of use of broadband Internet access in the FBiH is 20%, while in the RS it is 17 %.
Based on the analyzed data, the index growth in the number of Internet users in comparison to 2015 was 104.57 %. The number of Internet users in the year of 2015 amounted to 2,782,107, while the rate of use of the Internet for the year of 2015 amounted to 72.41 %.
In the period of analysis, conclusive with December 31, 2016, a total of 71 internet service providers worked in BiH.
The Agency is expecting that further liberalization of the market of telecommunications as well as the introduction of new technologies will enable the presence of high-quality services, and thus continue the positive trends in the use of the Internet in BiH. The offer of faster and cheaper Internet access represents a main precondition for development of IT society, and thus the progress of the economy and society as well, as noted in the statement.
