The doors of NATO are opened for Bosnia and Herzegovina, said the British Ambassador to BiH Edward Ferguson, assessing the still good prospects of BiH for membership in the most powerful military-political alliance in the world.
“During the visit to the Main Headquarters of NATO in Brussels, I could see that there is a great amount of openness and good will toward BiH. We greet the fact that the country launched the registration of military assets for use by the Armed Forces of biH, because that is the last remaining precondition for unlocking the Membership Action Plan, considering that there is a lot of work left in this field,” Ferguson said.
At the same time, Ferguson said, it is important to highlight that NATO is interested in a lot more than military assets.
“Ee also want the Presidency of biH to adopt the long anticipated Defense Review, because that would form an excellent framework within which we could improve our cooperation. According to that, I think we can be sure that NATO will keep sending positive signals to BiH at the summit in Warsaw and that it will continue investing the development of modern Armed Forces of BiH, an institution that can have an important role in ensuring the safety of citizens,” Ferguson said.
The British Ambassador assessed that in BiH there is a basic consensus that the EU integration is the only serious option for the future of the country.
“I believe that there is a general understanding that this country is facing serious economic and social challenges and that there is an urgent need for reforms. What is still unclear to us, as observers, is whether politicians from all parties are really ready to push aside the old political disputes and work on issues of greatest importance for the citizens of BiH instead,” stated the Ambassador of Great Britain to BiH Edward Ferguson.
