Leading Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung described the statements of the President of Croatia Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic as nonsense in a long analysis of Croatian problems within the EU, its internal problems and relations with neighboring countries, and wrote that the youngest member did not meet expectations after joining the EU.
In the text of a very sharp title – Croatia nurtures hostility with its neighbors – Andreas Ernst wrote that the youngest member of the EU did not meet expectations and instead of taking a leading role in the region, it is fighting with its neighbors, as well as with itself.
Ernst writes that the attitude of Croatia towards BiH is even less understandable. He characterized recent statements made by the President of Croatia Grabar-Kitarovic that there are 10,000 Islamists in BiH ready for the “holy war” as nonsense.
The NZZ noted that the region of Balkans with its multi-century Islamic culture is not a fertile ground for religious terrorism and he recalled the protests by the Reis-ul-ulema of the Islamic Community in BiH Husein ef. Kavazovic against the “warning” of Croatian President Grabar-Kitarovic when he asked her to give up the campaign that is hurting her reputation.
Ernst also emphasized that the stability of BiH largely depends on Serbia and Croatia and that Zagreb and Belgrade have direct responsibility for the situation in BiH since they have a strong influence on the Serbian and Croatian people in our country.
When it comes to the internal problems of Croatia, NZZ wrote that there is a cultural war within the society and within the government in Croatia. The NZZ also noted that Croatia disappointed in economic terms as well and that, four years after the accession to the EU, the income per capita is still 40 % below the European average.
The author of the article, Andreas Ernst, concluded that Croatia will not recover soon, both in economic and social terms.
