Swedish diplomat Lars-Gunnar Wigemark has been appointed Head of the EU Civil Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX Kosovo), the EU Council announced on 29 November. Mr Wigemark will take up his duties on 1 December and his term of office will run until 14 June 2020.
Wigemark, a Swedish national, was previously Head of the EU Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina and EU Special Representative to Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Head of the European Union Delegation to Pakistan.
As new Head of Mission of EULEX Kosovo he will be in charge of ensuring EU support to relevant rule of law institutions in Kosovo on their path towards increased effectiveness, sustainability, multi-ethnicity and accountability, free from political interference and in full compliance with EU best practices.
EULEX Kosovo was launched in 2008 as the largest civilian mission under the Common Security and Defence Policy of the European Union. EULEX’s overall mission is to assist the Kosovo authorities in establishing sustainable and independent rule of law institutions, with a focus on the police, judiciary and customs areas and through monitoring and operations pillars.
The decision was adopted by the Political Security Committee on 28 November 2019.
