A judge of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina and a newly elected member of the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HJPCBiH) Halil Lagumdzija was elected today as the new president of that regulatory body.

The decision on his appointment was made at the regular session of the HJPC BiH, which began this morning in Sarajevo. Eight members of the HJPC voted for Lagumdzija in the second round, while the judge of the District Court in Banja Luka Srđan Forca received seven votes.

Apart from Lagumdzija and Forca, the Prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH, Biljana Simeunović, also took part in the race for the position of the President of the HJPC.

The election procedure was conducted in accordance with the Rules of Procedure of the HJPC BiH (Article 4a), which includes the election of the President and the two Vice-Presidents. Everyone has the right to apply or to be nominated by the President and Vice-President, as well as by a permanent member of the Presidency of the HJPC.

The election of the president is done by secret ballot and each member can vote for only one candidate. The candidate who received the majority of votes is considered elected. If neither of the candidates receives a majority, a second round of voting is held, in which the two candidates with the largest number of votes enter the race. When electing the leadership of the HJPC, it is necessary to take into account equal ethnic representation.

He was elected a member of the HJPC BiH by the judges of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The position of the president of the HJPC BiH remained vacant after the resignation of Milan Tegeltija in mid-December last year, Fena news agency writes.
