At the Pediatric Clinic of the Sarajevo University Clinic Center, a stem cell transplantation was performed today for the first time. The transplantation was given to a 16 month-old girl from Bihac, diagnosed with a neuroblastome.
According to the director of the Pediatric Clinic, prof. Dr. Senka Dinarevic- Mesihovic, this a historical day for the Hematological Department of UCCS
“This transplantation has been performed in cooperation with a colleague from Ljubljana, prof. Dr. Janez Jazbec. It is a result of the effort and work of the multidisciplinary team consisting of transfuziologists, hematologists and pediatricians from UCCS. In our sterile unit, which meets all international modern standards, the transplantation of peripheral blood stem cells of children has been performed, which was unbelievable until recently. This procedure is done in only three centers in the region“, said prof. Dr. Dinarevic-Mesihovic, as announced from UCCS.
Cooperation between the Pediatric Clinic of UCCS and the Ljubljana Clinic Center has continued since 2003.
The savings made by performing these transplantation is substantial, since three or four transplantations may save more than 1 million BAM. The unit has state-of-the-art equipment, and the medical team consists of prof. Dr. Edo Hasanbegovic, Dr. Meliha Sakic,Dr. Adela Tunic, Dr. Senada Mehadzic, Dr. Ismail Lutolli, Dr. Nermina Cengic and the Head Nurse of the Autologous Transplantation Department Senka Fatic.
