Exhibition of photographs by Ivan Hrkas titled “Bamitbah”, translated as “In the Kitchen”, was opened last night in the hall of the City Hall in Sarajevo, which officially started the celebration of 450th anniversary of the existence of Jewish Municipality in Sarajevo.
Hrkas presented 30 photographs to the public, a part of a cycle of 100 photographs which are to be presented at the end of this year in book form.
Hrkas noted that the kitchen has been existing since 50s of the past century as a buffet where a man could drink a coffee or brandy, but that, due to the needs of the people of Sarajevo during the war, in 1992 it was improvised to a kitchen where each visitor could get a meal.
Hrkas was inspired with a desire to present the “forgotten space which was entirely engulfed by globalization and advanced technologies”.
Moreover, Hrgas added that even today each visitor can come to the Kitchen to eat from Friday to Moday, as well as to experience the charm of that place which represents an “oasis of peace” for many.
Silvija Dervisefendic is the curator of the exhibition which is to be opened until October 23rd.
