The representatives from the Development agency of the Una-Sana Canton (USC), the Cantonal Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage and the Government of the Canton and the City of Bihać visited yesterday paid a visit to the beginning of the reconstruction works on the restoration of the walls of the medieval fortress Sokolac.
One of the most beautiful old towns in the Una-Sana Canto is soon to shine in a new light and to become a new tourist destination in the offer of the city of Bihać, thanks to the project “Sustainable Management of the Adriatic Heritage Tourism-HERA”, funded by the European Union (EU) and co-funded by the Government of the USC and the City of Bihać.
“This object should be on service to the City and the Canton so that the tourists would come here because they indeed have something to see, rather than this being just a medieval construction that can be seen at the entrance to the city. I hope that after this renovation and restoration the tourists and the citizens will take advantage of the boon that we have”, said the Prime Minister Izudin Saračević.
The Mayor of Bihać Emdžad Galijašević said that this is an exceptionally significant project worth 700.000 BAM, and supported from the budget of the City with 80.000 BAM.
“This locality and this view of the city of Bihać from the tower is a unique tourist offer and that is why projects such as this one are given priority”, he emphasized.
The Development agency of the Una-Sana Canton is implementing this cross-border project together with 18 partners from eight countries of the Adriatic region.
“Within the project, the walls of the Old Town will be restored, electricity and water will be conducted so that a catering facility can be built as well, along with all the necessary tourist infrastructure” said the director of the Development agency of the Una-Sana Canton Eldin Begić.
The contractor has rehabilitated the access macadam road leading to the medieval fortress Sokolac prior to the very beginning of the works on the restoration of the walls.
