Throughout Europe on 10 May, there will be a cleaning action called ‘Let’s Clean Europe!’, and many people will be included in this project. Activities will be implemented in 15 EU countries, as well as in Andorra, B&H, Norway, Serbia and Turkey, said Patria Agency.
Every year, millions of tons of garbage end up on European streets, seas, rivers, beaches, forests and other natural areas. The project ‘Let’s Clean Europe!’ has the goal to raise awareness on the problems of waste and to encourage changes in behavior.
EU Commissioner for the Environment Janez Potočnik said that citizen movements of cleaning actions tend to spread in Europe.
‘’We have put together a network of national contact points in 21 countries so that people know what is going on in their neighborhood and what they can do in order to help solve the problems. We all want to live in a clean environment. Therefore, we are putting on our boots and gloves and are cleaning Europe together’’, said Potočnik.
This action is the last phase of a campaign in the framework of the European week for waste reduction, launched in 2009. In the beginning, it was aimed at raising awareness on the prevention of waste. During the last four editions of the week for waste reduction more than 25.000 communications activities were carried out in 28 countries and a network of private and public entities were developed that operate in the field of waste prevention.
The full implementation of the EU legislation on waste could save 72 billion Euros a year, increase the annual turnover in the sector of waste disposal and recycling and create over 400.000 new jobs by 2020.
