[wzslider autoplay=”true”]As we have already announced few days ago, Giro di Sarajevo is continuing with the realization of concrete small projects for bicycle infrastructure. Last week, cycling parking lot next to the House of the Army, at the entrance to Liberation Square (Alija Izetbegovic), was finished. This time we choose another attractive location in the city center, trying to make available all important facilities in the city to cyclists by providing them adequate parking lots for their bicycles, which are designed in accordance with positive international practices for construction of cycling infrastructure. On the beginning of the year, we proposed the project to municipality of Stari Grad, emphasizing that this is a project of small value but great benefit for the city’s cyclists. The municipality has recognized the quality of the project and as a responsible service of citizens, in this case the cyclists, they decided to fund the project in order to encourage the development of bicycle traffic in the city.
Project itself with the selection of the technical solution and location was proposed on behalf of the Association of the city cyclists Giro di Sarajevo, and it was built by its members Damir Margeta, master of traffic engineering, and Amina Sokolovic, a graduate building services engineer. Parking is composed of 8 so called A-racks, which are divided into two groups of 4 stands, placed on the east and west entrance on the Liberation Square. With this arrangement, we tried to provide several benefits.
First of all, designing of parking lots at the selected location is representing integration of two forms of transportation: bus and minibus on the terminal next to the House of the Army and bike parking lot. A very common architectural practice in the developed cities in the world is to place bike parking near the terminals and stops of public transportation. Thus, it offers travelers multimodality in transport or more precisely to arrive on the terminal by bike, leave it there and continue their trip to the hilly parts of Sarajevo, such as Kosevsko Brdo or Breka, by the bus or minibus. Once they return, they can take their bike again and continue their trip to other destinations.
Furthermore, stands are arranged in 2 groups on opposite sides of the Liberation Square intentionally, in order to cover area as wide as possible, and that parking lot is near the entrances to the educational institutions and other business facilities. Thus, the parking lot is located 30 meters from the entrance of the Secondary School of Applied Arts Sarajevo and 50 meters away from the main entrance to the First Gymnasium. On the other hand, another group of stands is placed at about 30 meters from the entrance to the Art Gallery of B&H and 60 meters away from the entrance to the Faculty of Economics and the main pedestrian zone of Sarajevo – Ferhadija Street. With this arrangement, we managed to get numerous contents closer to urban cyclists, but we are still hoping that students of nearby schools and Faculty of Economics will use the newly built parking lot the most.
This is the 4th cycling parking lot in the central city area, which was created as the result of initiative of members of Giro di Sarajevo. As an association of urban cyclists, we will continue with our dedicated work on projects for cycling infrastructure and we will seek to achieve cooperation with the private sector, as well as with representatives of international organizations and local authorities, who are ready to realize concrete and quality projects through partnerships, for benefit of the Sarajevo city cyclists.
