“He is certainly aware of what happened during the case and the arguments,” said David Scheffer regarding the role of Bakir Izetbegovic in the process of revision of the judgment by the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
When asked what is the role of the Bosniak member of the Presidency of BiH Bakir Izetbegovic in the entire process, Scheffer said:
“He is definitely aware of what happened during the case and arguments. I held consultations with him and Mr. Softic quite often. He was aware of this and he honestly believes in determining the truth about what happened in BiH back in 1992. He is a man who wants to fight against the denial of genocide by Bosnian Serb leaders such as Mr. Dodik. I believe that he appreciated this case and understood its value, and he often participated in the discussion with me and Mr. Softic,” stated Scheffer.
On the role of Geoffrey Nice and Nevenka Tromp, David Scheffer believes that this is “an interesting episode from the American perspective.”
“To me, that whole episode with Mr. Nice and Ms. Tromp is very interesting from an American perspective. The lawyers offer their services to clients and clients decide whether they will accept these services or not. The fact that a client refuses lawyer’s service is something that a client has the right to do. The lawyer cannot look for revenge and sue this potential client. That is how the relationship between lawyer and client works. There is nothing unusual in this, nor scandalous. The fact that Mr. Nice offered this information is interesting, but it does not necessarily mean that the client has to believe that this is the evidence with which they should work. This is client’s decision, it does not mean that there is something wrong with that. Mr. Nice can continue presenting his case as much as he wants, but BH authorities will decide in which direction to go at the end. There is nothing unusual there. I think it should always be kept in mind because it can be the decision of the client,” said Scheffer.
When asked whether and how much he charged his services, Scheffer said that he did not charge anything.
“I covered all my expenses and hundreds of hours of work, and I never charged anything. I am a professor of law and I have the freedom to dedicate myself to it and I believe that this is something that is worth fighting for. I covered all of my expenses,” said Scheffer.
