After she watched the story of the only man without identity in Croatia on the show “Provjereno” on Nova TV, Halida Jakupovic from Prijedor contacted the mentioned television. She is convinced that he is her missing brother Said, because, she says, a lot of that coincides – from the time of the disappearance, age, physical appearance to the health condition, as reported by Dnevnik.hr.
Her brother disappeared in August 1980 in the area of Prijedor, and since then he is missing without a trace. Years of searching were useless. After she saw the story of the rain man from Rab, she believes that she finally found him.
Halida Jakupovic from Prijedor is convinced that the only man without identity in Croatia is her missing brother Said Kesic.
He was found wandering in the area of Drnis 36 years ago. He was neglected and in very poor health condition. After sanatorium in Split, he was transferred to a psychiatric hospital on Rab. It had been the only home that he knows ever since, and hospital staff his only family.
Simple, approachable and modest – he is a favorite among the hospital staff, as well as other patients. They are collecting contributions for him in a special glass in the hospital canteen.
“He does not belong in a psychiatric hospital, there are no indications for his stay. He is here for completely humanitarian, social reasons. We should definitely try with accommodation in an appropriate institution. Maybe Rehabilitation Centre, considering that he is peaceful and non-aggressive,” said social worker Helena Grubisic.
Within the hospital, they named him Perica Matas, after one of the patients thought he recognized him, but he does not exist in the state. He is officially listed as NN person. No name, identification number…
After watching the story about Perica on “Provjereno”, Halida Jakupovic contacted them. She believes that he is her missing brother Said. He disappeared in the Prijedor area, two weeks before the Perica was found wandering.
“We searched everywhere, as much as we could. Through newspapers, radio stations and anywhere we could find. ”
They reported his disappearance to the police, which also started the search. Along with the police, Halida’s parents started their own. They were checking any information, which significantly decreased over the years. They searched the entire BiH. The disappearance of a sick son was especially difficult for Halida’s, now deceased, mother.
Said, just like Perica, had mental retardation from an early age. He was ashamed to be in the company of strangers, and he would only communicate with those he knew well.
It’s been nearly four decades since Said’s disappearance. There was a war in which Halida moved to Norway with her husband and children, and sister and two brothers in Croatia.
Said, just like Perica, could not function independently, but he was not the case for psychiatry but for increased home care.
“I would like to come to see him,” said Halida through tears.
Because of that, Halida decided to give a smear of oral mucosa to make a DNA profile. In the laboratory Genos will create Halida’s detailed genetic profile.
“The standard analysis is carried out on 16 molecular markers and this is the level of discrimination that is sufficient for determining the identity or for use in assays to determine the paternity. In special situations, if required by the circumstances, analysis can be done on the number of additional markers,” explained Peter Projic from the laboratory Genos.
Is Perica Halima’s missing brother or someone else? Where did he go and what exactly happened to him?
Perica has no identity, nor DNA profile, which was not created even though the police took the sample three weeks ago. Is Perica’s family found after almost 40 years, will be known after comparing DNA profiles.
